THE ROLE

AFP, a world leader in providing fast and accurate news coverage, is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated Thai-speaking, English-language reporter to join its Bangkok office.

You will be working in a fast-paced environment delivering precise, clear and well-written English copy in several formats, including breaking news, reportages and features, telling the story of Thailand to a global audience.

You will cover a wide range of stories from the impacts of regional conflicts and the scam industry, to politics, business and culture, the effects of climate change and the evolution of Thai society, most importantly its youth.

Developing a network of sources in Thailand will be a key part of the job, and you will closely monitor social media.

As well as covering breaking news, you will be expected to generate, develop and deliver your own story ideas, working under the supervision of AFP’s editors in Bangkok.

You will operate under AFP’s high standards of accuracy and fair reporting, and will work hand in hand with our photo and video reporters to ensure strong multimedia and visually impactful coverage.

You will contribute to the fight against misinformation by helping factcheckers in the network and ensure you are trained in the various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalism. Online training is available at AFP Digital Courses (https://digitalcourses.afp.com).

In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.

REQUIREMENTS

• Proven professional experience (3 to 10 years) in written journalism

• Native-level Thai and fluent written and spoken English

• Demonstrated strong news judgement and initiative

• Able to originate story ideas and eager to work in the field

• Comfortable using and monitoring social media

• Team player, able to work with colleagues in text, photo, video and our digital verification journalists

• Ready to work flexible hours when needed, including weekends

• The following skills are not essential but would be an advantage: experience in wire agency reporting; video reporting / editing skills; additional languages
