Telum Talks To... Jennifer Chan, Managing Editor, Home Journal

Huge Congratulations for Home Journal’s 41st anniversary! How did you mark this major milestone?
We just celebrated our 41st anniversary last year with a full-scale rebrand, which involved a multitude of changes in content direction and layout design across all touch-points. Our new content direction comes with a reinforced focus on Asia-based interior designs to bring readers closer to home, and an expanded coverage on art and culture – elements that are indispensable in the betterment of quality living.

The change in content direction came with a thorough overhaul, spanning our monthly print edition and digital destinations, with streamlined layouts to keep pace with changing reader behaviour, and evolving digital expectations.

Tell us more about Home Journal. What does the publication cover, and who does it serve?
Our mission has always been “where inspiration lives”. Each month, we cover a wide spectrum of areas that contribute to elevating the quality of living – from interior design, art and culture, to health and travel – with home features remaining the central ingredient of our content.

We explore interior spaces with a human touch and uncover the creative forces behind these spaces that aim not only to keep our readers informed, but also inspired. Over the decades, Home Journal has established a sophisticated readership composed of homeowners, design professionals, and tastemakers from across Asia.

There are quite a few home and design resources out there. How does Home Journal set itself apart from the rest?
We’re pleased to see many of our fellow design titles make the cut through this critical time. Staying afloat in this competitive, though exciting landscape, is absolutely no easy feat, and that’s why I trust each publication is unique in its own right.

For us, we distinguish ourselves as a design authority for creatives and tastemakers to share their experiences. We place design inspirations at the heart of what we do through tightly curated editorials in both English and Chinese languages, which, I believe, is quite exceptional in the market.

Our expertise in the field, and close relationships with design insiders, lays the groundwork for our recent venture, the Asia Designers Community, which was born with a vision to connect like-minded designers, brands, and property developers across Asia, while helping budding designers in their quest to reach their full potential. This is quite a strength in our arsenal that helps consolidate our position as a design authority in Asia.

How do you and your team determine what to feature on Home Journal’s website?
Spaces that are more than meets the eye. The team at Home Journal is always on the hunt for characteristic interiors with a human touch and emotional tinge, regardless of their geographical locations.

For sure we favour photogenic interiors that feast the eyes, but equally important is the stories of the people behind these interiors. On our site you can find homes of all sizes and styles, with extensive coverage on smaller homes in Hong Kong as well as small space solutions that most resonate with local readers. This further attests to our mission to support the local interior design community.

How can PRs work with the magazine?
PRs are welcome to pitch for any inspiring interior spaces from around the world, most preferably a newly completed project. For applicable spaces we’re most happy to curate a photo shoot with the presence of our stylists and editors on-set for a lovely editorial feature.
