Best of Telum: Editorial highlights from 2022

In anticipation of 2023, Telum's editorial team has brought together more of this year’s best East Asian content pieces. Following on from the previous alert’s summary, below is a selection of the incredible insights from the second half of 2022.

Face-to-face with Bloomberg TV and HK01
In the latter half of 2022, Telum’s in-person events finally made a comeback after a three-year hiatus. We kicked off with a sold-out session in November with Bloomberg TV’s Justin Solomon, who generously shared with our audience the BTS, pitching tips for TV and the value of broadcast in Asia Pacific.

The following month, we welcomed the cold weather with a cosy, Cantonese-language chat with the senior editorial team at HK01: Arthur Ngai, Assistant Editor-in-Chief (Local News), Dylan Hui, Director, OTT and Content Strategy (Lifestyle) and Roger Wong, Chief Assignment Editor (Finance and Business). In this client-exclusive write-up, we summed up a smidgeon of the discussion on schedules and deadlines, the desks’ collaborative differences and pitching tips.

Business, bylines and behind The Economist
In-person events are back, but there’s nothing like a webinar for cross-border chats. Having moved from Hong Kong to Singapore, Mike Bird, The Economist’s Asia Business and Finance Editor, shared with Telum in a one-on-one live webinar about how to engage with him, the publication and its podcasts. Mike talks about Money Talks, Monday pitch meetings and the magic of an offbeat pitch.

All eyes on the economy
The economy is no doubt going to occupy headlines in 2023. In September, we sat down with Vivian Kam, Producer at CNBC (Hong Kong), to hear about the business news broadcast that reaches 365 million homes worldwide, the greatest challenge she faces a producer and social media pushing the frontier of broadcast media. Vivian shares more about CNBC’s Asia-wide teams and topics on their radars.

The voice behind the SOPA Award for Excellence
In 2022, “The Hung Dang Xing Case: Taiwan’s First Death Penalty Trial Involving Children’s Voices” by Chang Tze-Wu won the SOPA Award for Excellence. As Managing Editor of The Reporter, Tze-Wu talked to Telum about who decides on editorial topics, what the publication focusses on, when they might invite external parties for stories, where his own interests lie, and how he cultivates creativity.

Your holiday check-out cart is looking a little empty…
The pandemic has brought online consumption to new heights. Early in August, Telum spoke to Jia Kun from specialised e-commerce media, Ebrun, to hear about the changes to Chinese e-commerce and consumption. As Editor-in-Chief, he discussed the magazine's editorial coverage, domestic consumption during the pandemic and how corporations will play the survival game in a maturing market.

To our readers
In 2022, the East Asia PR Alert at Telum featured nearly 100 PR and comms professionals and organisations in our long-form column. From Telum Talks To…, Spotlights on…, Agency Profiles and more, below is a small but mighty selection of the PR content from this year.

One highlight from the second half of 2022 was definitely the region slowly re-emerging from the pandemic’s fog. As part of the city’s path to recovery, the Hong Kong FinTech Week was held in November where our team took the chance to hear from ImpactNFT Alliance’s Joe Pan, Mridula Narayan at Quantium and Currenxie’s Sam Coyne on comms forecasts in the FinTech industry.

Soon after, we went on the ground to the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, getting insights from Siemens China’s Liang Xiujing and doTERRA’s Tony Liu. In a Chinese-language feature, they shared with us the changes, challenges and opportunities they’ve observed in media relations and comms during the CIIE.

In addition to the holiday offerings at Pirata Group with James Gannaban and arts and cultural relations with Susannah Morley at British Council Hong Kong, we expanded our horizons this year to an interview in Japan. We sat down with McDonald's Japan's CCO, Jonathan Kushner, to discuss everything from moon viewing burgers to cutting his teeth on crisis comms in the 2011 tsunami and COVID-19 pandemic.
