Telum Talks To...Eda Tang, Pou Tiaki Journalist for Stuff

Tell us about your role at Stuff. What do you cover?
I am a Pou Tiaki Journalist so I cover stories related to underserved communities with equitable representation at the forefront of my work. I particularly enjoy working with migrant communities, rangatahi, disabled and queer folk, and covering stories in te ao Māori and local arts communities.

What has been one of the most fulfilling stories you've worked on in this round to date?
A few weeks ago, I released Post Trauma on Stuff NZ which is a four-part docuseries about PTSD / injury. It was a project I started in 2019 following a handful of people from different walks of life who lived with PTSD / injury. The project began as a crowdfunded series collaborated on by some broke, time-poor creatives who just cared a whole lot about bringing these stories into light and raising awareness of some of Aotearoa's institutional pitfalls in healing trauma.

So many devastating things kept happening between 2019 and now that have made the project all the more challenging for both the production team and the people interviewed in the documentary. Three years later, the series hasn't become any less relevant or urgent.

Why is it important that PTSD / injury issues have a space in the mainstream media?
PTSD and injury have historically been represented as something only a certain type of person can have but the reality is, trauma can affect anyone at any point in their lives, and everyone will react to and absorb this trauma differently.

Understanding trauma from a personal, societal and institutional level helps us not only be more compassionate individuals but gives us ways of improving or reforming institutions of care and rehabilitation. The cost of trauma on almost all of our public institutions means that everyone has a stake in PTSD / injury.
