Telum Talks To... Editorial Team of Sustainable Asia's Greenbites Podcast

Would you like to give a brief introduction to the Greenbites podcast, its editorial team, and their experience in environmental journalism?
The GreenBites Podcast from Sustainable Asia is a 10-minute bi-weekly update of environment news highlights in Asia. Our hosts cherry-pick and wrap up the latest green news for our audience.

Editorial team includes:  Avery Choi, Khoa Tran, Chermaine Lee and Stella Chen.

Why did you choose to do podcasts to promote environmental journalism knowledge in Asia?
Asia has a large part to play in the fight against climate change because of its natural environment but also its dense population, yet economic development is uneven and many parts of the continent struggle to even make ends meet. By spreading awareness of environmental issues in Asia, we hope to keep the conversation alive and integrated into the economics and development discourses out there.

What are the top trends to watch out for in this field in 2022?
Climate protests: youth movements have taken off again as the world learnt to manage COVID, and there have been a few shortcomings from COP26 that many activists won’t allow politicians to forget.

Climate solutions: More and more new tech and innovative ideas will be put to test as world leaders are scrambling to slash carbon emissions.

Plastic reduction:  As PET and HDPE recycling infrastructure gets put in place across Asia, reduction of the use of the remaining types of plastics is critical to protecting the ocean and minimising carbon emissions from plastic production.

In your views, how do podcasts compare with traditional media formats in the way the story is told?
Podcasts provide a more intimate experience with news delivery; almost as if the listeners are being welcomed into a conversation. There isn’t as much formality as TV news where appearance plays a large role, and, since podcasts can be played in the background, they can be more easily “consumed” than a written piece which requires sitting and reading.

Unlike traditional media that occupies the audience’s entire senses, podcasts are perfect for multitasking. Our listeners can learn about the latest environmental news while commuting to work or doing chores at home.

Any tips for PRs when they are pitching to the Greenbites team?
There are two ways to approach us:

Sponsorship - we can feature your company/products in a short 30-second promo at the beginning or middle of the podcast, or

We may be adding an interview segment towards the end of the podcast that would be five minutes and highlight a new and innovative approach to solving an environmental problem in Asia. You can pitch us for that.
