Telum Talks To… Jane Sit, Senior Producer, CNN
You're a Senior Producer with the Global Features team at CNN based in Hong Kong. Can you tell us a little bit more about your role and the projects that you are working on?
CNN’s features group is an integrated, cross-platform, award-winning creative team, which produces more than 1,000 hours of original premium programming every year. This encompasses long-form series, documentaries and specials for TV, digital and social platforms. As a Senior Producer, I oversee different series and work with the members of our Asia-Pacific team to tell compelling stories for our global audience. Currently I’m heading up CNN Film School, a digital initiative that explores visual storytelling. Through this series we hope to inspire the next generation of filmmakers and show them the impact they can have. I’m also working on other strands that focus on sustainability, technology innovation, and business.
How is your team structured?
The features team works across content creation, content insights and concept development. My role is on the content creation team, made up of producers and writers. Everyone pretty much has a hand in every project we work on, so it is a very tight-knit team. We are part of a global features team and we often collaborate on content with our colleagues around the world. We have eight production hubs in Hong Kong, London, Abu Dhabi, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Johannesburg and Miami.
Can you tell us more about your career?
I studied broadcast journalism at Syracuse University in the U.S. After that, I worked in PR in New York, then came back to Hong Kong and went to law school. After graduating, I started working at CNN International. That was around 10 years ago. I started on the news side at CNN, writing for live news and business programmes. In 2014, I joined the features team and I’m still learning every single day. This role has taken me all over the world with plenty of travel (before COVID) and allowed me to meet so many interesting people from all walks of life. These experiences have helped shape me as a journalist and storyteller.
What themes / topics / stories are you most interested in? What are you looking for from PRs?
Our features team covers a range of topics - it includes (but is not limited to) sustainability, travel, technology and business. When I am reading pitches (I do read everything!), I am looking for ways to tell visual, impactful stories with interesting characters at the helm. Relevancy is also really important.
