Telum Talks To… Johan Nylander, Hong Kong-based Freelance Journalist and Author of The Epic Split – Why ‘Made in China’ is going out of style

Congratulations Johan on your book launch. Can you tell us a bit about your new book, The Epic Split – Why ‘Made in China’ is going out of style?
Many thanks! In short, the book is a report from the frontline of the US-China trade war. To be honest, I often feel more like a trade war correspondent than an Asia correspondent. The book explains why this global conflict is more serious than most people have realised. The trends towards decoupling from China and consumer boycotts against 'Made in China' are clear. The book explains how company leaders, policy makers and consumers navigate these new waters.

Why did you decide to start writing this book?
There are so many misconceptions about the conflict. Perhaps the biggest misunderstanding is that the trade war is purely about trade. It runs much deeper. It’s a fierce and escalating battle between two ideologies, with Beijing’s authoritarian model on one side and a Western-style democratic model on the other. To believe this could be fixed with a trade deal is pretty naïve. New decisions have to be made, and people will have to choose a side.

How did you find the process of writing a book, compared to your usual experience of writing news and feature stories?
When writing a book, I find it important to spend time on story telling. Too many non-fiction books just throw data at the reader, which often is overwhelming and pretty boring. I aim to bring readers to where I am, and help them to experience what I experience. The book is jam-packed with data, but also anecdotes and interesting characters.

What do you hope your book will bring to its readers?
I have tried to write a well-balanced book where readers will understand the conflict from both American and Chinese perspectives. After reading the book, the reader will have a much better understanding of the way forward. This is not a book about the world going up in flames; it’s about change and opportunities.

What are you currently reading?
“The Professional”, by W.C. Heinz. It’s the best fiction book about a boxer ever written.

Who is your media or journalist hero, and why?
I’m highly impressed by all fellow journalists and foreign correspondents who put their safety on the line for covering important issues and shedding light on dark corners of society. As some governments try to silence media, the job just gets more important.

What is the best way for people to get in touch with you either for commissions or about stories?
You’ll find me on my website, and my latest books at Amazon
