The best PR pitching experience I have had involved publicists taking time to read the paper, understand the stories we cover and then bringing great stories that are not going to waste my time (or theirs). Then not following up with phone calls, emails, texts, tweets and DM slides to make sure I got it.

One of my favourite and most memorable experiences was when a PR company reached out to organise for coffee to meet and talk about some of their clients that fit well with our brand. Their in-person pitch was natural and engaging. And since our magazine relies heavily on experience-type content, the PR company offered their pitch as a review rather than as a part of a listicle or something similar. It felt like they had really done their research on our brand, and their idea of speaking in person (rather than keep all interactions via email) felt more personal and appealing. Overall our experience with them has been great!

My experience was great because the PR got to the crux of the story quickly and succinctly when she pitched it, and already had some ideas for how it could work for me. She was also very open and accommodating about what I needed to make the story sing. In the end, the story was the best of both worlds - she delivered for her client, and I was able to tell a good story our audience wanted to read, which is all we ever want.
