The Washington Post to launch Sydney bureau

The Washington Post has announced it will launch a new Sydney bureau in 2021. The newspaper will also launch a bureau in Bogotá, growing its international newsroom count to 26 locations. The editorial team based in Sydney will cover news in Australia, New Zealand and their Pacific neighbours, as well as international news as it unfolds during Washington’s evenings. The bureau will be encouraged to cover issues including growing tensions between Australia and China, climate change, and global migration to improve The Washington Post’s news reach.

The move comes as part of The Washington Post’s broader expansion plan for 2021, with the newspaper currently looking to hire a Sydney Bureau Chief to open the Australian newsroom. The Washington Post’s Executive Editor, Marty Baron, said the team was “hugely excited to be expanding so dramatically” in the new year.
