NZ On Air backs Māori journalism with first round of Public Interest Journalism funding
Te Rito will see 25 new journalists hired, 15 of which will be based at NZME's Auckland offices and the remaining 10 reo Māori-fluent cadets at Māori Television. The cadets will work across the nationwide newsrooms of the four partners as well as the other affiliated media organisations, gaining experience in digital, audio, radio, video, television and print journalism. Applications for cadets will open later this year.
Other changes from the first round of funding include:
- Radio Waatea will begin airing a breakfast current affairs show, five days a week. The Radio Waatea news team will also begin feeding stories to the wider Iwi Radio Network.
- AWA FM, which is also owned by Iwi Radio Network, will receive funding to report news from the Whanganui Māori perspective. News will be delivered in Whanganui dialect reo and English.
- The Rotorua Weekender will begin printing a weekly bilingual section, covering Rotorua iwi (people / tribal nation) issues. This will be the only newspaper in New Zealand to have a weekly bilingual section dedicated to these issues.
- Te Hiku Media and Iwi Radio Network will begin covering stories for Northland iwi.
- A selection of Māori journalists will create a summer edition of The Hui on Newshub.co.nz. This will be broadcast during The Hui's summer hiatus.
- Victoria University of Wellington will debut a special edition of student magazine, Salient. The new edition, called Te Ao Mārama, will be written by Māori students at the university.
- The Spinoff will launch a new podcast and written series, Nē?. This will explore issues within te ao Māori through a Māori lens.
- The Aotearoa Media Collective for RNZ, Tūranga FM, Radio Waatea, will debut an audio and video series, Party People. This series will critically review politics.
