Telum connects: What does an ideal press release look like?

By Jessica Damiana

Press materials such as press releases could be an important part of a journalist's daily routine. It has a potential to be developed into an in-depth piece as well as keeping them up-to-date.

However, they still find that sometimes press materials are not written effectively. Raja Eben Lumbanrau of BBC News (Jakarta) suggests that communications professionals go back to the basics. ''It should provide an answer to the 5Ws + 1H, which stands for what, when, where, why, who and how.'' Arfyana Citra of Kontan also suggests they should always introduce themselves first when sending press releases.

Meanwhile, Mother & Baby Indonesia's Senior Editor Tifanny Warrantyasri said no press kit is complete without high resolution photos with captions. A local journalist working for a Japanese newspaper, Rizki Akbar Hasan, said he has no problem with press materials written in Indonesian of English, since the most important thing is the accuracy of the data.
