Tell us about the Star Observer and how it got started. What type of content do you cover?
Star Observer has been setting Australia’s LGBTQIA+ agenda since 1979, with a long and proud history of independent journalism.

From the early days of Mardi Gras, to the AIDS crisis, and the battle for marriage equality, Star Observer has been there providing in-depth and independent journalism about the issues facing the LGBTQIA+ community.

Over 2.3 million loyal readers embrace our publications annually, which includes a popular news website, social media channels, as well as our monthly Star Observer Melbourne and Sydney print publications.

Who makes up the editorial team?
Based in Melbourne, Shibu Thomas is the Star Observer’s News and Digital Editor. Our Print and Features Editor, Douglas Magaletti, is based in Sydney. Reach both of them at [email protected]

How often is the magazine published?
The Star Observer is a digital-first publication with no fewer than four stories posted to our site seven days per week. Once a week we generate an EDM newsletter with our top ranking stories included in the broadcast. On the first weekend of each month, we publish a glossy magazine which is distributed free of charge in Sydney and in Melbourne.

Will you feature any special content for Mardi Gras?
The Star Observer’s digital platforms will provide online readers across Australia and from around the world with WorldPride updates as they become available. Our monthly magazine targets LGBTQIA+ consumers in Australia’s largest gaybourhoods in Sydney and in Melbourne.

In mid-February, in time for Mardi Gras Fair Day, the Star Observer will produce a glossy pocket-sized Pride Guide which will provide visitor information about where to go and what to do in Sydney and beyond in February and March.

Tips and ideas for PRs when pitching?
The Star Observer works with freelance contributors who are passionate about the LGBTQIA+ community. Story ideas and writing samples should be sent to [email protected]. Press releases of interest to the LGBTQIA+ community are also welcome.
