Job description
THE ROLE
The international news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP) is seeking a photo manager with demonstrated expertise and passion for photography, journalism and visual storytelling to drive coverage across Indonesia.
The Chief Photographer will be a dynamic and enthusiastic individual who has the proven ability to lead a large and talented photo network in a hugely competitive news environment. He / she should have extensive experience in photo agencies and a solid understanding of wire photography and its demands.
The Chief Photographer will play a key role in training and developing the skills of the photo team and is in charge of recruiting top-quality stringers, a key component in what is a vast geographical area.
He / she is expected to generate original story ideas, research stories, plan and assign coverage and photograph a wide range of news and feature stories. Photo coverage across the archipelago is varied and centres mainly on politics, the economy and social issues, besides environmental and climate concerns plus natural disasters.
The Chief Photographer will also be responsible for generating ideas for new formats, including the production of photo stories and essays, which are increasingly important to AFP’s multimedia production. The chief photographer will also be responsible for mission proposals and stringer assignments that conform to budget and for updating the inventory of photo equipment.
The Chief Photographer must be able to work effectively in a collaborative environment, closely coordinating with the Jakarta bureau’s text, video and digital investigation teams. He / she will work under the day-to-day supervision of the Bureau Chief in Jakarta and ultimately report to the Asia-Pacific Photo Director in Bangkok and Regional Editor-in-Chief in Hong Kong.
The Chief Photographer may also be asked to cover events outside of Indonesia if the news requires, mainly in Asia-Pacific but potentially outside of the region as well. The job requires flexibility in working hours. The Chief Photographer will be called on to work evenings, weekends and public holidays when necessary.
The successful candidate will respect the agency’s editorial policy and other guidelines, including those on the use of social media. He / she should be familiar with the issues involved in handling user-generated content (UGC), third-party content and AFP’s guidelines concerning their use. Online training is available at AFP Digital Courses (https://digitalcourses.afp.com) for learning about various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalism.
In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.
REQUIREMENTS
Please send a CV, cover letter and work portfolio to recruitment.asia@afp.com, specifying in the subject line: Recruitment Jakarta - Chief Photographer.
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further steps in the recruitment process.
AFP is committed to equal opportunities and greater diversity within its teams. We therefore encourage all applications in order to preserve the wealth of profiles, cultures and languages that constitute the strength of our network.
