Job description

We’re looking for a senior journalist to work on LawNews, the flagship weekly publication of The Law Association (formerly known as ADLS and the Auckland District Law Society) and its sister publication, e-Bulletin.  Either fulltime, or for the right candidate part-time, freelance or working remotely.

Perhaps you’re an experience as a court reporter or you’ve worked the business, politics, science or economics rounds. Or you’re a great all-rounder who’s ready to take your career to the next level. Ideally, you also know something about the law!  We’d expect you to be an experienced news-hound who can dig out and nail down your own stories, as well as handling more routine assignments. You’ll have great contacts and your writing skills will be exceptional.

The Law Association is based in modern offices in downtown Auckland but for the right person we’re happy to consider other locations. We’re committed to flexible working and in this role we place a higher value on productivity and output than on the number of hours spent in the office.

The successful candidate will have:
  • newsroom experience (this is a non-negotiable)
  • excellent news judgment, meaning you have a nose for potential stories and can recognise risk
  • strong writing skills, ability to meet deadlines & strong attention to detail
  • excellent inter-personal skills, particularly the ability to build relationships and establish credibility with lawyers
  • exceptional interviewing and communication skills
  • the ability to work autonomously (while remaining a strong team player)
  • video journalism skills (a nice-to-have)
The Law Association is New Zealand’s only independent, national membership organisation representing the legal profession.

We’re offering a great opportunity to work in a small but very active organisation at a time when the legal profession is undergoing significant change.
