Publication Profile: The Last Post

"I love stories of resilience and stories of veterans who have emerged from their service to play a good and important role in society after their service."

Telum Media spoke to The Last Post's Managing Director / Publishing Editor, Greg T Ross, about the origins of the publication and the importance of telling veterans' stories on a national scale.

What motivated you to start The Last Post?
My father fought in WW2. When he returned to Australia, he started a newsletter that he would circulate around RSL clubs in Sydney. He called it The Last Post. In 2010, I decided to bring my father's old publication back to life. I wanted to make it national and have it serve as a contemporary voice for veterans. I also wanted to help veterans with the transition back to civilian life.

How have you seen the magazine develop and change in the last 11 years?
It has been, and continues to be, a wonderful journey. We've cut through on so many levels, and the magazine is now known and loved by many. In 2018, the federal government commissioned a special health edition, and in 2019, with help from RSL Australia, we were paid to visit Japan. So, each edition brings new, good things while still maintaining the message we've carried since the first edition in 2011.

What stories do you enjoy covering the most?
I love stories of resilience and stories of veterans who have emerged from their service to play a good and important role in society. I'm always up for a good sports or arts story too - I love including them.

What sort of growth do you hope to see from The Last Post in the next few years?
I'd like to see the magazine continue to grow in the digital arena while maintaining our print numbers. We've also released our new podcast. It's presented in a radio show format with Gary Mac and myself as the hosts. Gary is a radio legend, and we're so lucky and happy to have him on the team. I’m excited to see how The Last Post grows across platforms.

I've heard, many times, that The Last Post is a beautifully presented publication, and that's what I set out to do from the start. To do that though, we must have a good graphics team. Kirstie Wyatt from Wyatt Creative is responsible for the look and feel of The Last Post, and it could not be done without her.
