ABC increases investment in regional and rural journalism

The ABC has announced an expansion of its regional and rural journalism offering by investing in additional journalists to file stories from regional locations across Australia.

The move follows the public broadcaster's content sharing agreement with Google and Facebook earlier this year. Revenue from these agreements will see the ABC place more than 50 journalists across regional Australia in more than 20 locations. The positions are expected to be filled by early 2022.

The changes are as follows:
  • Individual reporters will be placed in Gladstone, Northam, Swan Hill, Victor Harbor and Whyalla, where there are currently no ABC reporters based.
  • Five mini bureaus will be opened on a trial basis in Batemans Bay, Carnarvon, Charleville, Hervey Bay and Warragul.
  • Regional hubs that serve larger areas will also receive additional support, including Burnie, Dubbo, Esperance, Horsham, Karratha, Katherine, Longreach, Toowoomba and Wagga Wagga.
  • Several new national specialist rounds will be added to the ABC’s regional remit, including water, mining, social affairs, and health.
  • ABC’s regional youth initiative ABC Heywire, will also have teams embedded in regional locations, starting in Victoria.
All positions and placements will be reviewed by the ABC towards the end of 2022.
